People often visit libraries that aren't close to their homes, and use the space as a refuge. The best libraries today are reaching into communities with non-book related programs. This affinity map helped us draw insights by capturing our observations and highlights from research and interviews. Design Principles It became clear that CPL has at least two distinct user groups — lower income and middle and upper income—and there's little overlap in how each group uses the library. We developed three design principles: Solutions should create accessible spaces where Chicagoans want to go to feel safe, use necessary resources, and be connected to the community. Solutions should support low income Chicagoans who are looking for jobs, and empower them as they grow and develop their careers. Solutions should provide outreach and increase awareness about library services among Chicagoans.
