"The idea was always that it was a vertical community, not just tall buildings. At the time people thought we were dreaming, " says Nasr, who previously led the city's comprehensive planning process for downtown. "People thought everybody would take their children and leave for typical single-family housing, and what we have found is people do enjoy the convenience and interesting opportunities of living in a more urban area. " By 2016, the need for more family-friendly infrastructure at CityPlace was undeniable. "Even from the first community meetings, the front hall was packed with strollers. You almost couldn't walk in because of all the strollers, " says Peter Duckworth-Pilkington, principal at ZAS Architects, which designed Canoe Landing. "There was a plan but there was a need for the detailed design to catch up to where the community already was. " [Photo: Michael Muraz/courtesy ZAS Architects] The resulting design came from a process of working directly with the city and the residents of CityPlace, which gave the architects a more comprehensive idea about what role a combination school and community center could have.

In 2020, you need to adjust that strategy, because a barely-there presence is not going to cement your status. "As a new person you won't be top of mind, because people don't even know about you yet, " says Brower. Counter that dynamic by taking the initiative in establishing new connections. Set up one-on-ones and virtual coffees with key people, and then follow up later to maintain those relationships. Find a mentor who is familiar with the ins-and-outs of how the company operates and has a vested interest in seeing you succeed. Network with everyone else who started work this year - it is a unique bonding experience, so use it to your advantage. It is not easy – especially for introverts – but aggressive connection-forging will kick off a "virtuous cycle" of being invited onto more and more projects, Brower says. SOCIALIZE, VIRTUALLY It is not quite the same as grabbing a drink at the local bar after work, but you can and should socialize with new colleagues now. If you are just talking shop all the time, they are not getting to know the full you – and you are not really getting to know them.

Under normal conditions, without warming, scientists would expect that 2. 5 per cent of the Earth would experience "very high" temperatures in a given year. In 2019, 52 of the Earth did. Almost 10 per cent of the planet set local heat records for average annual temperature; no place broke a cold record, according to Berkeley Earth. The findings come from five of the top organizations with climate science programs around the globe. They were the U. S. space agency NASA and the U. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the World Meteorological Organization and Berkeley Earth, a non-profit scientific research group, and the U. K. Met Office. The annual temperature data are closely-watched numbers and greet a world touched by the impacts of global warming on a daily basis. Australia's deadly and destructive fires continue to burn as the summer there nears its peak. The U. Northeast saw readings in the last week that are expected in May but troubling in January. A team of climatologists on Jan. 13 reported that the oceans, which store more than 90 per cent of the Earth's extra heat, were their warmest ever last year.
Shadow financiers gave too many loans to developers for homes that never got built. Capital markets became casinos where brokers lure day-traders with additional leverage on already-leveraged derivative products. Not many of India's one dozen state-run banks will survive. Technology will render their deposit-taking privilege obsolete over the coming decade. A lender's expertise will lie in using big data to find customers with stable cash flows, originating credit against those cash flows, and selling to investors. This is the model that shadow financiers, caught napping making loans for long-term assets using short-term borrowings, are gravitating toward. India should give them a nudge. The part of India's finance-construction growth that survives will be worth saving. It may be no less important to the country's future than the software firms of the 1990s that had honed their skills on domestic projects like computerization of railway tickets. They hit the global scene once the Y2K millennium-change scare stoked demand.

Future economic historians will look back on this period as one when greed combined with really bad financial engineering led to a decline in America's economic strength. Nancy Langwiser-Kear Wellesley, Mass. The way I was taught long ago is that when there are no better uses for a company's excess capital and the price of the company's stock is "undervalued, " it's okay to repurchase company shares, especially by a company in the mature stage of its product life cycle. Given the rise in stock prices, it's disturbing to see so much stock-buyback activity. Recommended Reading Are opportunities for reinvesting earnings in the future development of a company dwindling? Rex O'Steen III Greenville, S. C. I worked for Equifax for five years and left before the data breach. One year, the company "invested" more than $500 million, which was roughly one-fifth of its annual revenue, in buybacks. When asked after leaving about the data breach, I always said that one-tenth of the amount invested in buybacks—about $50 million—would have gone a long way to secure consumer data.
L. W. Bower Albuquerque, N. M. EDMON DE HARO Measles as Metaphor In August, Peter Beinart showed what the disease's return says about America's ailing culture. I retired recently after 29 years of training and practice in primary-care pediatrics. I take exception to the notion that pediatricians do not spend time reassuring patients about vaccine safety because reimbursement is inadequate. My colleagues and I routinely stayed past the allotted 15 minutes per patient to explain to parents why their beautiful baby would be vulnerable to meningitis, pneumonia, whooping cough, and severe diarrhea if not immunized. Parents who simply have questions usually are reassured by thoughtful conversation. However, my experience is consistent with research that has shown that no amount of counseling and accurate information sways parents who are dead-set against immunizations. These encounters are deeply distressing for pediatricians, because prevention is at the heart of our mission, and we value the trust of parents more than any compensation.
