Ms. Barr, who gave Mr. Macdonald one of his earliest writing jobs, on "Roseanne, " lost her rebooted show on ABC after a racist tweet in May. "Roseanne was so broken up that I got Louis to call her, even though Roseanne was very hard on Louis before that, " he said in the Hollywood Reporter interview. "But she was just so broken and just crying constantly. There are very few people that have gone through what they have, losing everything in a day. Of course, people will go, 'What about the victims? ' But you know what? The victims didn't have to go through that. " Mr. Macdonald apologized on Twitter, saying the two performers were "very good friends of mine" but that he "would never defend their actions. " NBC canceled Mr. Macdonald's appearance on Jimmy Fallon's "Tonight Show" hours before it was set to air. "Out of sensitivity to our audience and in light of Norm Macdonald's comments in the press today, 'The Tonight Show' has decided to cancel his appearance on Tuesday's telecast, " the network said in a statement.

But, you know what? The victims didn't have to go through that. " And for that, The Tonight Show canceled his Tuesday appearance; he was forced to publicly apologize; and people questioned whether his own new talk show on Netflix should be canceled. Well, that and his statements that he was glad the #MeToo movement was slowing down and fearful it would steamroll innocent people. Apparently we can't handle discussing that. On a talk show. With a comedian. Serious allegations of sexual impropriety deserve serious scrutiny; there's nothing wrong with acknowledging that. To do otherwise undermines everyone's credibility. As does refusing a person the opportunity for penance. But I don't forgive Norm. I don't think he did anything wrong. Tricia Bishop is The Baltimore Sun's deputy editorial page editor. It's all quite depressing. But the silver lining is that the episode reminds me of a Norm Macdonald clip, one that dates back to an appearance he made 21 years ago as a panelist on Bill Maher's ABC show Politically Incorrect. The panel, which included a travel writer, a singer, and a then-still-conservative Arianna Huffington, was discussing the wisdom of granting China most-favored-nation status in international trade. Huffington attacked the idea, while Maher opined that China was, "historically, a very isolationist country. " Throughout the discussion, Macdonald was mostly silent, looking at the floor. But at the end he piped up. "People forget a very important thing, " he said. "The Chinese are a lot smarter than us. " It was classic Norm: unpretentious, mischievous, irreverent, and the only funny thing that anyone said on the show. With one riposte, Macdonald showed why comedy is comedy and public affairs is public affairs. He was right then. He's right now.
